ALTHOUGH the steering group of the Oldham Business Awards has not been able to do what they do best – organise and run what is acknowledged as the best event of its type in Greater Manchester – they have not been idle.
Regular meetings via Zoom keep the group focused and in touch with each other and all the stakeholders. And continue to support Mahdlo and Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, two major charities in the borough close to the hearts of all who support the awards.
Thanks to the residual funds accrued by the steering group, eight Mahdlo members – aged from 13 to 18 – chosen by youth zone staff enjoyed the trip of lifetime to London. Fully funded by the Oldham Business Awards, the two-night trip included a Virgin train to the capital, including a Starbucks breakfast at Piccadilly Station in Manchester described as a ‘real treat’ and sightseeing visits to Buckingham Palace, The Mall, a Thames River cruise and a tour of the House of Commons.
“This was organised by Oldham MP Jim McMahon,” said Mahdlo’s Claire Crossfield who accompanied the children, adding: “They had a magical time, it was wonderful so much joy in them. They all said it was the best thing they had ever done, and all thanks to the Oldham Business Awards.” They also visited a youth zone in London, similar to the Oldham charity.
The steering group also supported supported efforts by Mahdlo, Oldham’s pioneering youth zone in Egerton Street, to support families over Christmas with a cash donation towards. the distribution of 400 hampers filled with festive treats of food and staple items, including hygiene essentials and a family board game. Around 2,200 people were beneficiaries.
Claire Crossfield from Mahdlo said: “This donation was amazing, massive thanks to you all. We are so grateful for everyone involved in the Oldham Business Awards and all you have done and continue to do for Mahdlo.” Plans are in hand to hold the Oldham Corporate Quiz – which financially benefits Dr. Kershaw’s-as a virtual event this year.
